Omega 3 Movement.com asked me to tell my health story. When I think about it, it's actually very simple. I have a weakness, my mind. It makes me do things I don’t want to do. Let me tell you what I mean with that.
I'm an amateur bodybuilder. Everyone who wants a great physic is conscious about their health and what they eat. I love to lift weights. Many bodybuilders hate one or two exercises. I don't, I love them all. You must think, okay so you must be huge/ripped. Well, kind of. But I would have looked a lot better if I knew earlier that my brain is playing tricks with me.
EVERYONE HAS A WEAKNESS
This is especially true in Bodybuilding. Some people have a poor lower back, poor shoulders or other physical problems. My greatest weakness was my mind. I was a beast in the gym but sloppy at home. I used to skip meals, go to bed late, didn't drink enough water and all kind of bad things.
KNOW YOUR WEAKNESS TO OVERCOME IT Everything has to work together to get the best results. It's like a chain. One weak link and the chain breaks. If you know your weakness, you can work on it. I knew I was sloppy at home but I thought it wasn't so bad. One day I really started to think, what am I doing wrong? I found out my mind was playing tricks with me. Making up excuses to be lazy. I got so mad at myself that day. Since then I'm much more focused. I know what I’m doing wrong and I'm making a change. Every time my mind says to do what I'm not supposed to, I answer; I own you!
ABOUT THE BRAIN Your brain has three layers; the reptilian brain (the oldest brain), the limbic brain (emerged in the first mammals) and the neocortex. In short: all decisions we make start in the reptilian and the limbic brain. The neocortex will then calculate and make the final decision. Is it worth it? What are the benefits? What are the risks? Each time you’re craving for unhealthy foods, your neocortex needs to decide; to eat or not to eat?
HOW TO CONTROL YOUR BRAIN Step one is knowing your brain. I just explained it roughly, up to you to de your research Step two is training your brain to make the right decisions. The stronger your neocortex, the better you can overrule your reptilian and limbic brain and make the right decisions. Each time my brain says; eat those chocolate chips, I find it very rewarding to know that I now have a better developed neocortex that can say, no!
SUMMARY Know your weakness. It can be family, home situation, work, illness or a lot of other things. If you know your weakness, you have a mission and you can start improving.
If you are just like me and know that your mind is failing you. You can follow my tips listed under 'about the brain' and 'how to control your brain'.
